Cobh Ramblers recorded a vital win over over Shamrock Rovers as they move off the foot of the table and give themselves every chance of avoiding relegation following this victory at St Colman's Park.

The crucial goal came from the penalty spot with 12 minutes remaining.

Substitute Daryl Kavanagh was brought down in the penalty area by goalkeeper Robert Duggan ,referee Ritchie Winter pointed to the spot and Ross Gaynor scored.

The game finished with Rovers hitting the crossbar through Simon Madden, but Cobh completed the double over the Dublin side with only their fourth win of the season.

Rovers had failed to score in the clubs two previous meetings this season, with Ramblers winning 2-0 at home back in April and the sides playing out a scoreless draw at Tolka Park in July.

The Dublin club were without suspended centre back Darragh Maguire, who was sent off the previous week against Bohemians, but skipper Aidan Price recovered from a shoulder injury to take his place in defence.

The home side had dropped to the foot of the table following home wins by fellow relegation strugglers UCD and Galway the previous night, so a good result was very important in the battle at the bottom.

Ramblers, who had lost one of their previous five league encounters, produced the best chance in an uneventful first half.

Alan Carey crossed from the right into the penalty area and when striker Ross Gaynor failed to connect, the ball broke to Kenny Coleman but his close range shot was saved by Robert Duggan.

The visitors, who attempted to play good football in a tight game, created a few openings after the break.

Seàn O'Connor struck a dipping shot from 25 yards which flew just wide of goalkeeper James McCarthy's net.

Mid-way through the half Tadhg Purcell fired in an effort which the home goalkeeper did well to touch away from danger, as the game started to open up a bit with both sides seeking a winning goal.

Then came the penalty kick award as Gaynor converted his third spot kick since joining in July and his fourth league goal to make him joint top scorer with Kevin Murray.

Rovers hit the crossbar through a brilliant Madden shot and Kavanagh had a ball taken off the line by Danny O'Connor at the other end as the game ended in a welter of excitement.
